Summary: The second in "The Story of Fashion" series examines the relationship between style and history, and fashion and its social context from the early 20th century onwards. It looks at the influence of individual designers including Coco Chanel and Jean Patou, analyzing their different approaches, and the wide range of sources fashion has to draw from, such as art styles and photography, as well as the rise of the celebrity role model and the model-as-celebrity. The film discusses the creation of not just a style but of a whole range of associated products, from perfume to jewellery, which is crucial to the success of a fashion house. The tradition of high-class men's tailoring is also examined.
