Slim and inexpensive, this volume offers 400 reliable and accessible entries for keywords, events, figures, and concepts from the Victorian era important to the study of literature. Clearly written entries assume no previous knowledge of the period and generally range from about 100 to 600 words. Cross-references are indicated by capitalized words and phrases. See also references are generous. Although entries emphasize contextual and background information for the study of Victorian literature, they also include information on historical, political, and cultural topics important for understanding the era. Where possible, brief quotations from original sources clarify concepts. Longer entries frequently offer one or two suggestions for further reading. A comprehensive index and well-conceived bibliography complete the work. Comparable reference sources are longer, more expensive, and more cumbersome to use. Designed with undergraduate students of Victorian literature and culture in mind, this text should find its way into the reference collections of most libraries in hardbound form and will surely find its way into the offices and studies of graduate students and faculty. Summing Up: Highly recommended. All collections. Copyright 2004 American Library Association.
