  • School Library Journal Reviews : SLJ Reviews 2005 February
Gr 7-12-A young adult male hosts this series of programs designed to teach students research strategies that will help them build "a lifelong skill." Filmed in a modern school library where multiethnic students are working on a variety of topics, individually and in groups, each video focuses on a different component of the research process. Avoiding Plagiarism addresses careless paraphrasing, "cutting and pasting" without attribution, buying papers online, and passing off old work as new. Evaluating Sources uses a mnemonic device to highlight terms used to evaluate both print and non-print sources: credibility, accuracy, reliability, relevance, date, sources and scope. Media Literacy looks at types of information created in advertising, entertainment, politics, and news, advising viewers to question the context in which it is presented. Organizing Research illustrates ways to "build" research, likening it to assembling a car from "parts," using concept maps, timelines, venn diagrams, outlines, and effective quotations. Presenting & Communicating Research helps students select a format that is best suited for their audience and message. The final product may be multimedia, oral, print, or a combination. Before and after scenarios show teens how to improve an oral presentation. Searching the Internet shows close-up screens of an OPAC search, metasearch engines, and databases, and offers tips about keyword and Boolean searching. Terms are reinforced as graphic captions, and the host summarizes program concepts. This up-to-date and polished series will be a valuable aid to high school teachers and library media specialists involved in the research process.-Vicki Reutter, Cazenovia High School, NY Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
