The first thing to notice about this long-awaited new edition of the classic work is how it has shrunk: the seventh edition ran 292 pages, while the eighth is half the size. A comparison of tables of contents reveals that chapters are replaced by parts, and now there are only two: "Principles of MLA Style" and "Details of MLA Style." All reference to research and writing processes or the mechanics of writing have been excised. The previous edition contained the chapter "Plagiarism and Academic Integrity," but now a scant three and a half pages cover the subject. "Title of..." (book, article, film, etc.) has been changed to "Title of Source" uniformly.

A completely new vocabulary refers to a "container"—the larger work that holds a source, which may also be "self-contained." A container thus may be a book that holds a collection of essays, a periodical its articles, or a television series, a website, a comic book series, etc. More than one container can be associated with an entity, for example, a journal article's container could be The Georgia Review (now correctly titled with the definite article), while another could be its JSTOR iteration. Librarians will have to learn this new terminology and its application by studying the handbook's "Practice Template." Looking up e-books in the index reveals two detailed entries and "see also digital media." Under "digital media" one finds "gathering information on," on which page we see a screen shot of a web page and pointers to the relevant information. The back cover states that "More than just a new edition, this is a new MLA style." Agreed—and likely an essential purchase for libraries and individuals. But as it gains wider use in colleges and universities, this work is bound to be controversial. Just don't blame the librarian. Summing Up: Essential. Community college and undergraduate students through researchers/faculty; professionals/practitioners.

The Modern Language Association of America (MLA) has once again offered up a new edition of the MLA Handbook. Sleeker and thinner than its predecessors, this new guide is much more direct and to the point. It provides clear and concise answers to MLA style questions. A much more user-friendly book than previous versions, the new guide is very visually oriented and easier to use. It breaks down the pieces of a citation and shows readers where to find the publisher, author, and other necessary information for a work cited or a citation. It streamlines the information on how to cite online sources, labeling itself a "rethinking of documentation for the digital age." MLA has improved its guide by adding principles of evaluating sources as a main component. Both students and adults alike need help evaluating the validity of a source, both in research and everyday life. This is the best guide that MLA has produced.—Barbara AllenWolny, Philip, Ed. 100 Most Influential Religious Leaders of All Time: The Britannica Guide to the World's Most Influential People. Rosen, 2016. 372p. ISBN 978-1-68048-277-5. Photos. Glossary. Index. Further ReadingThe title says it all. Wolny has delivered snapshot biographies of men and women from Moses through Joel Osteen. Most are well-known, others are not. A majority of the entries are one page in length. Jesus, Muhammad, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Gandhi, and Martin Luther King, Jr. are covered in more depth. The writing is objective and covers their lives, beliefs, controversies, reactions from government officials to them, and their effect on those around them at the time. Although two leaders of the Church of Latter Day Saints/Mormons are introduced, founder Joseph Smith, is not profiled. Another omission is Dietrich Bonhoeffer. It is an intriguing look at not only people, but also the beginning of religions and ministries which continue to impact people worldwide today. Some are accompanied by black-and-white or color paintings or photographs. It is convenient to have all of these people in one volume for easy reference. A glossary, list of titles for further reading, and an index are included. Other titles in this series feature entertainers, medical pioneers, military leaders, and technology leaders.—Pam Carlson Table of Contents. Forward. Intro. Further Resources. Templates. Index.
