A companion to Gale's Shakespeare for Students I [RBB Jl 92] and II (1997), Shakespeare's Characters presents information on the plays in a format geared toward the typical high-school assignment. Unlike the other books, Characters covers all 38 plays in one volume. Following a biographical sketch of Shakespeare, the book is arranged alphabetically by play. Besides character entries, each play section includes an act-by-act summary. There is also a useful discussion called "Modern Connections," which explores the modern relevance of each play's themes. The character entries under each play are alphabetical with see references. They vary in length from one line for walk-ons like Mariana in All's Well That Ends Well to two pages for major characters like Coriolanus. The essays are well done, covering motivation, role in the action of the play, and more. In entries for Hamlet, there is discussion of how modern ideas in psychology apply to the play. Descriptions of Helena and Bertram in All's Well That Ends Well show why a hasty resolution puts that work in the class of problem plays rather than true comedy. The book closes with a character/topic index. Inclusion of topics is limited. Hamlet is not listed under murderers, and only MacBeth is listed under ambition.Like the companion titles, Shakespeare's Characters for Students is designed for its intended audience in terms of presentation and vocabulary. It will be an important addition to public and high-school libraries. Academic libraries might want to consider it for work with first-and second-year students. Gr 8 Up?While the title states that this book is primarily for students, that limitation is unnecessary. Anyone?student, general reader, play or moviegoer?who needs quick clarification of a character from any of the plays will find this volume helpful. Citing the 1974 edition of The Riverside Shakespeare (Houghton, 2nd ed., 1997) as the authority, the book lists every character in every play, including heralds, captains, and pages. The writing is clear and direct. The plays are organized alphabetically by title. Each entry begins with an act-by-act plot summary followed by a section entitled "Modern Connections," which attempts to compare situations, personal issues, and feelings in the plays with readers' perceptions of today's world. The characters are listed alphabetically with a leisurely examination of their roles, followed by a list for further reading specific to that play. Some of the references, particularly the journal articles, are old or specialized and may be difficult to locate but others are more generally available. The character/topic index is extensive. A user-friendly general reference book.?Sally Margolis, formerly at Deerfield Public Library, IL
