More than 1,000 entries define and explain causes of asthma and other respiratory diseases and disorders. Information on treatment protocols, medications, research, and prevention is given, as are definitions of key related health terms. Entries for professional and nonprofit organizations are also included. Most definitions are very short, often just a phrase or a sentence. In one exception, the Asthma entry runs several pages and is nicely organized by subtopics such as "Symptoms and Signs of an Asthma Attack" and "Medications for Asthma." Entries for other respiratory diseases are several paragraphs long and, although the basics are covered, are not nearly as comprehensive as the asthma article. Some articles are accompanied by statistical charts and graphs. There are also tables listing things such as the weeds and trees that cause hay fever. The A-Z definitions and articles make up just over one-half of the book. The remainder is composed of extensive appendixes, most of which give statistical details about asthma. The introduction states that the encyclopedia is a resource for patients and their families, but the vocabulary is geared to a professional reader and those familiar with medical terminology specific to respiratory disease. Health information consumers will find more accessible information in the Lung Disorders Sourcebook (Omnigraphics, 2002) and Respiratory Diseases and Disorders Sourcebook (Omnigraphics, 1995). Both of these titles are part of the consumer-friendly Health Reference Series. Other useful titles are The 2002 Official Patient's Sourcebook on Asthma (ICON, 2002) and the AMA's Essential Guide to Asthma (Pocket Books, 1998). The Encyclopedia of Asthma and Respiratory Disorders would be useful in libraries serving health-care professionals and students involved in a health curriculum. Consumers are awash in self-help and alternative therapy books on asthma and allergies, but Navarra provides a much-needed consumer reference on asthma and respiratory disorders. The entries are clear, and include see and see also references. The book ends with recent reports and statistics from reliable sources such as the American Lung Association and the National Center for Health Statistics, a list of professional and lay organizations, and a bibliography. Navarra duplicates entries from her and Myron A. Lipkowitz's The Encyclopedia of Allergies (CH, Jan'02) but adds original entries specifically addressing nonallergy-related asthma and respiratory disorders. This encyclopedia is not meant to supply in-depth discussions like those in Phil Lieberman's classic Understanding Asthma (CH, Mar'00); neither is it as general as Respiratory Diseases and Disorders Sourcebook, ed. by Allan R. Cook and Peter D. Dresser (CH, Jun'96). Instead, it provides understandable definitions and explanations for many of the diseases, terms, and drug names used in these and other resources, and by health care professionals. ^BSumming Up: Recommended. Tova Navarra, nurse, journalist and former schoolteacher, has written a well-researched and informative book on respiratory health entitled The Encyclopedia of Asthma and Respiratory Disorders. Navarra's aim is to educate the public – those afflicted and those not – and to promote prevention of respiratory ailments. Following A to Z Allergies and The Encyclopedia of Allergies, 2nd edition, this new effort focuses on many more "breath-robbing" diseases than just allergies and asthma.Asthma is a rapidly growing respiratory disorder in the United States especially among African-Americans and those people who live poor, overly-polluted urban areas. While asthma is the most heavily discussed respiratory disorder in Navarra's Encyclopedia of Asthma and Respiratory Disorders, other disorders such as tuberculosis, AIDS, occupational ailments, lung cancer and second-hand smoke disorder are also well-represented. With more than 1,100 entries, The Encyclopedia of Asthma and Respiratory Disorders defines and explains medications, treatments and therapies, medical and scientific terms and the many organizations devoted to research and treatment. Some definitions use very technical language; readers may find themselves flipping to other definitions in the book to help clarify their understanding. Although fairly brief, entries are well-researched and are often cross-referenced with other entries in the book for further reading or explanation. Black and white charts and graphs help illustrate a handful of the entries.A full one-third of The Encyclopedia of Asthma and Respiratory Disorders is comprised of appendices, which compliment the definitions in achieving Navarro's public education goals. Recent nation-wide studies and reports from scientists and respiratory organizations, like the American Lung Association, are presented. Also included in the appendices is practical information for those suffering from respiratory disorders such as asthma treatment forms that patients or parents may photocopy and use everyday and a list of professional and lay organizations across United States.Patients, their families and students writing about respiratory disorders will find this reference book, one of a very few about respiratory health, informative and useful. The Encyclopedia of Asthma and Respiratory Disorders, part encyclopedia, part sourcebook, is recommended for the academic and public library, as well as any medical or health library.
