This resource for general readers, students, parents, and those affected with learning disabilities compiles documents and excerpts from publications issued by government agencies, plus copyrighted material from organizations and universities. Full citation information is provided on the first page of each chapter or section. Of special interest is a section on the special educational process, with material on the child's rights, IEPs, and the transition to high school and college. The book also offers accessible information on the definitions, signs, causes, and diagnosis of learning disabilities. One section is devoted to specific types of learning disabilities. There is also material on many other disorders that affect learning, such as ADHD, cerebral palsy, and emotional problems. An entire section offers coping tips for parents and for adolescents, young adults, and adults with a learning disability. The book concludes with a glossary, a directory of websites and organizations, and sources of college funding for students with learning disabilities. • Choice Reviews : Choice Reviews 2013 February
In her introduction, Pinder (multicultural and gender studies, California State Univ., Chico) notes that "while there is no escape from multicultural studies, there is also no limit to the contexts in which grappling with issues that are critical to multicultural studies can be productive." This wide-ranging volume of 29 essays presents those contexts in two major ways. First, it comprises seven sections, each devoted to a key area: theory, race, gender, ethnicity, sexuality, cultural diversity, and education. Second, the 29 essays contextualize these seven areas via a multitude of historical, regional, political, aesthetic, methodological, and topical perspectives. The balance of the essays is noteworthy: some address broad issues (e.g., Sean Robinson's "Multicultural Studies and Sexual Diversity"), and some offer detailed examinations of specific cases (Eduardo Barros Grela's "Chicano Visualities," Sarah Kanbar's contribution on Syrian American identity). Contributors are equally diverse in training, discipline, and rank. Especially noteworthy is the inclusion of many voices of younger scholars and thinkers. What binds the volume is the commitment to a critical multiculturalism that illuminates the relationships of power and oppression among socially constructed subjectivities and cultural formations. The result is a rich volume offering fresh interpretations and new arguments for moving the field forward. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty.
