  • Doody's Reviews : DOODY
This book represents a historical evolution and expansion of Madeline Leininger's work on transcultural nursing. Previous editions were published in 1978, 1995, and 2002. This edition has the same title with 25 new chapters including updates to Leininger's theories, new information on globalization of transcultural healthcare, genomics and genetics, transcultural food functions, a focus on mental health, and research in diverse cultures. The purpose is to provide an understanding of new transcultural nursing concepts and findings, as well as the application of these to nursing practice, in addition to identifying future movement in the field of transcultural nursing. The goals are artfully fulfilled in the book with key terms, specific examples, bulleted points for emphasis, tables, summaries, and discussion/reflective questions at the end of each chapter to provide active learning opportunities. Since the previous edition, the work in transcultural nursing has expanded making, this edition extremely beneficial. It focuses on ways in which we can provide culturally congruent transcultural healthcare to a range of individuals to organizations working on local to global levels. According to the authors, this book is intended for practitioners wishing to deepen their knowledge of transcultural nursing. It is geared towards those who have some basic knowledge of transcultural nursing and its concepts. Although the book is targeted at the nursing profession, the authors indicate through examples that this information is applicable to other healthcare disciplines as well. The authors are global content experts and leaders in transcultural care and were entrusted by Madeline Leininger herself to complete future editions of this book prior to her death. The book has three main sections covering essential transcultural nursing knowledge (including descriptions of models/theories, globalization of transcultural nursing, communication, genomics, and food functions), special topics (mental health and other populations), and the research related to special populations. It would have been helpful to start each chapter with objectives or an introduction to provide readers some guidance. Key terms are defined throughout the book and tables and boxed content in the chapters help summarize key points. Each chapter ends with a list of references and reflective questions that strengthen active learning. The appendix lists all studies that conceptualized Leininger's Culture Care Theory and/or Ethnonursing Research Methods from 1966-2017. This edition, with its current research and practice, presents the expansiveness of transcultural nursing to build nurses' level of knowledge in caring for patients from different cultures and to empower them to propel transcultural nursing to a global level. 0.91.
