  • Doody's Reviews : DOODY
This book is designed to assist undergraduate and graduate nursing students, as well as practicing nurses, learn to critique nursing research articles. A template used by experienced nurse researchers is used on a variety of nursing studies exemplifying the critiquing method. Overall, research critique examples assist students and nurses in the development of this skill toward integration for evidence-based practice. Critique examples include quantitative and qualitative research. The purpose is to "present the (research) study and the critique side by side so that inexperienced reviewer (most often students in their first research class) can follow logically and quickly ascertain the dimensions of each critique that the experienced researcher evaluated." The audience is "both undergraduate and beginning graduate students, and experienced practitioners." The authors and contributors are researchers and educators. Among the many features in this book that will assist students and nurses in understanding the concepts of the critique is an example of the template, the research article, and the completed critique by the experienced researcher. This comparison enables emerging research students the ability to see logic, critical thinking, and key components of critiques of nursing research. The book offers both quantitative and qualitative studies on a variety of nursing topics and incorporates statistics and graphs in the studies. An index allows students to correlate themes in multiple studies. This book offers strong examples of the critique method in both quantitative and qualitative nursing research. It would provide supplementary support for a research course or as a reference in a hospital or library setting. At the undergraduate level it is unlikely that the book would be more than a supplement/resource as it does not offer faculty sample assignments using the template for practicing the critique process. The template is not available in an online format nor is a learner practice study (study without expert critique). This weakness must be weighed with the possibility of using the book as a component of a nursing research course. 0.74. Lynne M. Kuhl, MSN(Viterbo University). Copyright 2016 Doody Reviews.
