Working with families / Rena Shimoni, Joanne Baxter.

Shimoni, Rena, 1948- (Author). Baxter, Joanne, 1955- (Added Author).

Summary:

Working with Families teaches the important connection between the well-being of children and the well-being of families. The authors accomplish this by integrating knowledge from a broad range of disciplines -- sociology, psychology, anthropology -- into a practical book that combines the their theoretical knowledge, professional experience, and involvement with students. Working with Families has been written for educators who value the prospect of expanding the scope of their practice in engaging families by focusing on three aspects: enhancing an understanding of family so that educators develop an increased awareness and appreciation of the children and families who they interact with; engaging with and supporting all types of families by providing a foundation for educators to build relationships and share dialogue with families as equals both invested in the best interest of the child; and understanding the diversity that exists within Canadian families-this may include cultural diversity, diversity in family structure, social and economic diversity, or it could be related to particular life events a family may be experiencing. The book is divided into three parts. Part 1, "Understanding Families," provides the conceptual framework for understanding families. Authors have attempted to use the most inclusive definition of families in this section, and have provided examples of nontraditional as well as traditional families. Part 2, "Facing Family Challenges," consists of 12 chapters devoted to the challenges families face today. Early childhood professionals are very likely, in the course of their careers, to work with children who have dealt with a death in the family or a divorce. Many children are from single-parent families, families who live in poverty, or families in which one of the members has special needs. Understanding these families' challenges will help the early childhood professional offer support in a nonjudgmental and empathic manner. Finally, Part 3, "Working with Families," offers a framework for early childhood professionals to apply their understanding of family in their efforts to involve families in the care and education of the children. This begins with an overview of parental involvement from a theoretical perspective, then proceeds to consider practices with parents from a family-centred approach.
