  • Doody's Reviews : DOODY
This book details numerous dimensions of resilience within healthcare, particularly focusing on resilience in nursing practice. The authors selected contributors who could provide breadth and depth about resilience and offer engaging activities to promote application of learning about resilience. The web resources appear to offer readers a sufficient online format. The first edition of this book was published in 2011. From the authors' perspective, the purpose is to help nurses learn about resilience in tandem with learning to become change agents to ensure their own health and wellbeing and the health and wellbeing of those entrusted to their care. While, as the authors' note, this is an ambitious goal, it is absolutely essential for preserving the crucial role nurses have around the world in providing quality healthcare services. At first glance, the audience appears to be undergraduate nursing students. However, with further examination, it is clear that this book is useful for a wide range of nurses practicing in a variety of settings. The book has a clear focus on empowerment strategies for building resilience, ranging from building resilience in oneself to building resilient healthcare systems. Each chapter offers a different aspect of resilience based on theory and research. The chapters are easy to read and comprehend. Tables, boxes, photos, and stories help capture readers' attention. One of the most useful and consistent features is the collection of activities at the ends of the chapters, which are thought-provoking and promote optimal learning about resilience. While the book is comprehensive, readers could benefit from more black-and-white photos with captions, such as the one on page 6. Most of the chapters in this book are of high quality. There is some disparity in the level of detail, although this variation overall does not distract from the book's value. This book is a keeper, and a much-needed resource for nurses. Based on its content, it is a must have for any nursing curriculum. 0.83. Martha Scheckel, PhD, RN(University of St. Thomas Morrison Family College of Health). Copyright 2016 Doody Reviews.
